The Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve is an expansive protected area featuring vast dune fields, volcanic landscapes, and desert ecosystems, offering unparalleled opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and desert exploration.
The Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve is located in the northern part of the Mexican state of Sonora, bordering the southwestern United States’ Arizona region. Covering approximately 598,000 acres, this reserve preserves one of the largest dunes fields in North America, known as the Gran Desierto de Altar, and a volcanic shield region called Santa Clara Volcano within the Pinacate Mountains. The area’s varied geology includes active and dormant volcanic craters, lava fields, and massive sand dunes stretching more than 150 kilometers. Ecologically, the reserve supports unique desert habitats that harbor rare and endemic species such as the Sonoran pronghorn, desert bighorn sheep, and a variety of birds and reptiles adapted to extreme arid conditions. Historically, the region has cultural significance to Indigenous peoples including the Tohono O’odham, with evidence of ancient human presence. Recreation in the reserve centers on hiking through volcanic craters, dune buggy tours, bird watching, and photographing the dramatic landscapes. Key landmarks include the volcanic craters known as “El Elegante,” natural oasis areas, and the extensive dune fields offering robust wilderness experience. The biosphere status highlights ongoing conservation efforts to protect fragile desert environments and scientific research into desert ecology. Visitors appreciate the remote wilderness, dark night skies, and the rare combination of geological and biological diversity that distinguishes this protected place.
